COLOURS OF DATA

In his corporate roles, in which he spent a large part of his working life in London, Tomáš Mátl began to realise that companies were generating large amounts of data that they couldn't use effectively, and so he began to help them work smarter on the basis of data. Initially he worked as an independent consultant, but very quickly more and more customers started coming in and the idea of starting his own company was born. Colours of Data doesn't have colours in its name by accident, because what characterises Tomas' company is diversity and variety, and not only diversity in terms of client portfolio, where they work for customers in different sectors from retail, telco, banking to entertainment business, but also in terms of different sizes of companies and different countries from UK to Ukraine. The interesting thing about Colours of Data is the team is made up of personalities from different countries and cultures and that is their biggest added value.

Palette of colours

The word "colours" in our name is not chosen randomly, although it might seem so at first glance, because Colours of Data is a sexy name and the data itself is incredibly colourful and diverse. Today's world is changing and every good business needs to have diversity. Diversity of customers, diversity of opinion and ideally diversity of culture. It's just great when people with different cultural backgrounds look at the same problem. A Czech will look at a Czech bank's problem differently and a Hungarian or a colleague from Ukraine will bring a different perspective and ideas. The key to being able to work well together in such a diverse setting is to have a very well put together team, to use our talents and, perhaps most importantly, to be as open as possible with each other.

When I started CoD, I was convinced that if the success of the company was going to depend on anything, it was going to depend on people who needed to be treated humanely, who fit together mentally, and who were professionals enough that I wouldn't have to control and manage them.

You have to be able to plan things

You have to be able to plan everything from your own time to handing over the work to the customer. If you need micromanagement, you'll find it in CoD. If you can't ask for support, you'll be lost in CoD. Anyone who doesn't understand that with trust and flexibility comes a great deal of self-reliance and responsibility should look elsewhere. CoD is for people who value freedom and trust and want to do the best job for themselves, which is what we have committed to clients.

Being on the freelance team is a commitment to all my colleagues that they can rely on me. 

We're a team that fits in one cottage and we enjoy it.

The advantage of having a small team of people with the same passion for one area is that you don't have to deal with any hierarchy. From consultants to sales, we all know what to do, what our tasks are and the desired goal, which we often define with the customer. You won't find unnecessary micromanagement and meaningless assignments. Nobody assigns or controls our work. It's entirely up to us. On the other hand, we can react very quickly and help each other when someone needs help or a problem arises that just needs more attention. The advantage is that we are connected directly to the customer and not, as it is the case in big companies, that someone else is in charge of the customer than the person who is carrying out the job. Here everything is close together and that makes it fast and agile. You always have the hands, advice or know-how you need when you need it. And we can still fit in one cottage in the mountains.

Openness and trust

We are characterized by fairness and honesty. We want to keep everything, as they say, "straight". We tell each other everything openly, even though it can sometimes be uncomfortable. We don't leave anything under the carpet or in our own heads.

Every quarter, Tomas is completely open about what our results are, how we are doing financially, and brings us into all the topics that come up in CoD. You won't see gossip, assumptions or backbiting. It's also fundamentally because we place a lot of importance on recruiting colleagues to expand the team with people who are like-minded. Without trust and openness, a team that operates predominantly remotely could never be formed.

Flexibility is the key to well-being and growth beyond borders

The basis of our working setup was to connect with the first people who came to Tomáš in CoD, which were Petr Václavek, who lives and works in Šumperk, and Agnes, who lives in Budapest. It was logical that we decided to use remote cooperation as our primary way of cooperation. As other colleagues joined us, who were also from different parts of the world, we found that the fact that we have no regional borders in our cooperation opens up a lot of opportunities, including business opportunities, because we automatically have them in the place where our colleagues are from.

At the same time, this flexibility gives us the freedom to live and work as we see fit. Want to work early in the morning, then go for a run and coffee with a friend over lunch, then work in the evening? You can. Want to work from Dubai? You can. You want to work ten hours straight? You can. The organization of our time and our work is entirely up to us. How we arrange it, that's how we do it. Our goal is to deliver results for the customer. That's our responsibility, not sitting in one place for eight hours. What's really unique about CoD is the level of support you get from everyone you ask for support.

Of course, it was unthinkable for us to be just remote and we need to meet for a whole day from time to time and go over strategy together, or just see each other, have lunch together and talk. What are we going to say, you can't go team building every month.

That's why we have Opero, a beautiful space in the heart of Prague where we all love to go. The advantage of having a CoD membership at Opero is that any of us can come here and use the space at any time, which is great because sometimes you need to be around people or change the environment to solve a stuck problem. Or just to be around people who are building similar businesses and you can share experiences with them.

I hate getting up. I don't make coffee till about 10:00, and then I sit down to work. I go for a run in the afternoon, and then I work till the evening. I'm sure I work overtime sometimes, but because I enjoy it and I love my job, I wouldn't think of doing it.

The team at ease

I guess it's because of the personality of Tomas and the people around him in CoD, but even though we have pressure from the amount of work and open projects with demanding clients, you could say there is a certain balance and comfort. The support we can give each other and the fact that we each work at a pace that suits us all contributes a lot to that, which also contributes a lot to the inner wellbeing. So if you asked Agnes how she would rate the work of the team she would tell you: "Happy, Relaxed, Chill and challenging projects and clients."

You may be at the point where you see potential in your customer data. Maybe like Denys, who was doing the same thing for a client and thought it was time to look at the data in more detail. He learned Python and got into data analytics. With that said, you start looking for a position where you can dive more into data analytics. At this point, like Denys, you discover the magic of CoD, which is the diversity of our projects.

You can start to look under the hood of different companies in different industries, different sizes and different countries. This is incredibly rewarding because you gain experience day by day. We're at a stage here where almost every day we're doing something we've never done before, we're exploring assignments we haven't had before and we're constantly learning from that. 

Growth mindset

We are all motivated to learn new things and grow and consider it our own individual responsibility. We want to explore new things, try new approaches, test new technologies. Perhaps we could safely say that learning is our common passion. We don't want to tap dance in place when what we do constantly offers us a huge variety of possibilities. If you don't want to push yourself, it's a transgression against our shared principles. If there's one thing we really don't like, it's stagnation.

Maybe that's why we are so focused on the change we want to bring about with our customers.
